Overview

What Gait Analysis Is

Gait analysis is a non-invasive method for examining, in detail, the way you walk or run. Using training in biomechanics, our podiatrists assess your movement patterns and identify where they contribute to pain, inefficiency or injury.

It is a particularly useful tool for runners: small faults in running mechanics are often behind injuries that keep coming back despite rest.

What It Helps Identify

Gait analysis commonly uncovers mechanical patterns such as:

Excessive pronation or supination

the foot rolling too far in or out

Ankle instability

a joint that gives way or feels unreliable

Leg-length discrepancy

asymmetry that overloads one side

Poor shock absorption

force passing up the limb instead of being dampened

Unusual movement patterns

compensations that shift load to the wrong structures

How It Works

Common Questions

Gait Analysis FAQs

The questions patients ask us most about gait analysis.

Do I need a referral for gait analysis?

No. You can book directly. If you have a Medicare care plan or private health extras, bring the details and we'll help you use them.

Is this only for runners?

No - it helps anyone whose pain is linked to how they move, from walkers to weekend athletes. It's simply especially valuable for runners, where subtle faults cause recurring injury.

What injuries does gait analysis help with?

It's commonly used for shin splints, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, ankle sprains, knee pain and stress fractures - problems where movement mechanics are part of the cause.

What should I bring?

Bring your usual trainers and any other shoes you run or train in, plus any current orthotics. Comfortable clothing you can move in helps.
