Overview

Why a Proper Assessment Matters

Foot and ankle pain rarely happens in isolation. The way you stand, walk and load the limb - and problems higher up the chain at the knee, hip and lower back - all feed into it. A quick look at the sore spot often misses this, which is why pain keeps coming back.

Our assessment is deliberately thorough. We take a detailed history, examine the foot and ankle hands-on, and analyse how you move, so the diagnosis is accurate and the treatment is aimed at the cause rather than chasing the symptom.

What We Assess

Every assessment is tailored to your presentation, but typically covers:

Clinical history

your symptoms, activity, footwear, medical background and any prior treatment or imaging

Hands-on examination

joint range, muscle strength, tender structures and skin and nail health

Gait & biomechanics

how you stand, walk and load the foot, and what's driving abnormal load

Diagnostic imaging

in-clinic diagnostic ultrasound where it helps confirm the diagnosis

How It Works

What to expect.

01

History & discussion

We start by understanding your symptoms, goals and what you've already tried, so nothing relevant is missed.

02

Physical examination

A hands-on assessment of the foot and ankle - joints, soft tissue, strength and skin - to localise the problem.

03

Movement analysis

We watch how you stand and walk, assessing biomechanics and load to understand why the problem developed.

04

Diagnosis & plan

You leave with a clear explanation of what's going on and a staged, realistic treatment plan.

Common Questions

Foot & Ankle Assessment FAQs

The questions patients ask us most about foot & ankle assessment.

What should I bring to my assessment?

Bring the shoes you wear most, any orthotics you use, a list of medications, and any previous scans or reports relating to your feet or ankles. A referral isn't required, but bring one if you have it.

Do I need a referral for an assessment?

No. You can book a foot and ankle assessment directly. If you've been referred under a Medicare EPC plan or by a specialist, bring the referral as it may affect any rebate.

Will I get a diagnosis on the day?

In most cases, yes. We'll explain what's going on and outline a treatment plan at the appointment. Occasionally we'll arrange further imaging to confirm before finalising the plan.

How long does the assessment take?

Allow around 30 to 45 minutes for an initial assessment, longer if it's a complex or long-standing problem. We'd rather be thorough than rush it.
