What Foot Mobilisation Is
Foot mobilisation is a manual therapy developed to improve foot and ankle function by targeting joints that have become stiff, misaligned or dysfunctional. Rather than treating symptoms alone, it works to address an underlying mechanical cause.
Your podiatrist assesses the individual bones and joints of the foot and ankle, then uses gentle hands-on techniques to restore movement - encouraging the body's natural repair processes, reducing pain and improving foot posture.

Who It Can Help
Foot mobilisation is used for a range of foot and ankle problems, and often works alongside other treatments. It may help with:
Heel and arch pain
where joint stiffness contributes to load problems
Ankle stiffness
restricted joints that limit normal movement
Achilles tendinopathy
as part of restoring normal foot and ankle function
Bunions
improving joint function and comfort in the forefoot
Sports-related injuries
where mobility and mechanics need to be restored

Foot Mobilisation FAQs
The questions patients ask us most about foot mobilisation.
Is foot mobilisation painful?
The techniques are gentle and controlled. You may feel mild movement or pressure at the joint, but treatment shouldn't be painful. Tell your podiatrist if anything is uncomfortable and they'll adjust.
How is it different from a massage?
Massage works on soft tissue; foot mobilisation works specifically on the joints of the foot and ankle - restoring movement to stiff or misaligned joints to improve overall function.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the problem and how long it's been present. Mobilisation is usually part of a wider plan, and your podiatrist will give you an estimate after assessing you.
Will I need orthotics as well?
Sometimes. Mobilisation restores movement, while orthoses or exercises may be needed to support the change and stop the problem returning - your assessment will guide this.
